• Introduced by George Gabriel Stokes in 1951

• To predict the pattern of fluid flow

• Ratio inertial forces : viscous forces

• Flow becomes turbulence then known as critical Reynolds number

• Re    ≲ 2300                         laminar flow

• 2300 ≲ Re ≲ 4000                  transitional flow

• 4000 > Re                            turbulent flow
